Julia Creek

On Saturday the 29th May we left Winton and headed toward Julia Creek. We drove to Kynuna which is a tiny town and has an iconic pub called the Blue Heeler Hotel. We stopped there for coffee which I had been hanging out for as I had not had a proper coffee for many days. Would you believe their coffee machine had broken down. So I went on to the fuel stop just up the road and found they had a basic, but working coffee machine and gladly indulged. Jan & Ross joined me in the coffee loving. We then headed on to the secondary road from the highway we had been on to head due north to Julia Creek. Most maps show this road as unsealed but it is sealed. A lot of it is single lane, meaning get off the road if a road train is coming, but that adds to the fun of country driving. So we reached our destination and went into the RV self contained free camp. After speaking to the camp hosts and registering we went and found a spot.
The free camp is only a kilometre from town. It doesn’t have any toilets so you have to be self contained but the walk is not to long to town. They have cleverly established this free camp on a water hole which turns it from a dust bowl into a pleasant place to stay.
The town is very well kept and you can see the pride that the community have in it. There is a beautiful ANZAC display.
The Information Centre has a display of the little Dunnart animal that is local and protected. The centre was closed as it is a Saturday and on the last occasion we were here they had a blackout would you believe. So these photos are from our last trip here which had been taken of a video we watched.
Each day at the free camp they have a happy hour which all are welcome to attend. For whatever reason this particular day was a quiet attendance. I am sure I had a shower that morning.
So Julia Creek is clever at promoting itself and attracting the grey nomad dollars. Another thing this proud town does to draw in travellers is that on a Monday night the different community groups, such as Rotary, the Football Club and others host a roast or other type of dinner night and invite people from the free camp. I am told that it is the same tireless workers that are involved in all the community groups that are there to do the hosting each time. It costs about $15 but would be a lot of fun. I have not been here on a Monday night to partake. It has been closed through covid but is starting up again on the very next Monday night. Good on you Julia Creek. Love that town.
