Walkers Crossing With Lynn & Wal

On Monday the 7th June we left Karumba and headed to Walkers Crossing which was only around 40km on the way to Normanton. I was meeting up with friends Lynn & Wal who we met caravanning back in 2013. I have caught up with them numerous times since then which has been great and they have featured in several of my blogs. They had been in Ningaloo Reef and other places in WA for a few months and were making their way home gradually. They were coming across the top end to get some red claw and enjoy their trip home. So we pulled in to their camp and it was great to see them.
They were down by the water at the crossing where there is a weir trying to catch some barra. They are great fishermen and their freezer is full of spangled emporer (snapper) from WA at the moment. There are fresh water crocs in that water and possibly some salties but probably not. We had a cuppa with them and their friends, Ken & Marilyn who they are travelling with.
I set up camp to stay with them for the one night and Jan & Ross pushed on to Croydon.
After some more chatting and catching up I went with Wal to check his pots to see if there were any cherubim and red claw caught. It was a good walk through the bush and it was quite lovely going along the creek. The trees are amazing and all sorts of shape as they adapted to their surroundings. There was all this, what was like hair but would have been semi formed bark all over the limbs. The scene was like what you would expect in American bayous.
There was one red claw and about 7 or 8 cherubim. That night we had a good catch up and chat.
Next morning I went with Wal to check the pots again. We were hopeful of a better catch as the red claw are more active at night. It was a nice walk through the bush again in the morning. It was a reasonable catch with a good number of red claw and cherubim. Listen for the bird sound in the video. That is the blue feathered Kingfisher. Their sound is iconic in the top end.
We went back to camp and it was time for me to get going to catch up with Jan & Ross. It had been great to see Lynn and Wal and also Ken and Marilyn who I had met last December at Swansea. Before I left Lynn and Wal gave me a few cherubim and a red claw to sample which was terrific. I will be buying some pots of my own now that Wal has shown me the ropes.
