Burketown & Tiranna Springs

On Saturday the 26th of June I left Leichardt Falls and headed for Burketown. The trip was uneventful, however I had done about 100km of gravel road since leaving Normanton and it was reasonably good gravel. I arrived at Burketown and as you come in to town the first thing that presents is the Burketown Bore. I stopped and had a look. Sorry about the signage. The main story about this bore is that it turned out to be to salty and was disused. It is interesting to see how much mineral deposit has built up.
The Information Centre was closed but there was an info board outside that provided some information.
I then visited the Burketown Cemetery. Another information board and some old graves but the inscriptions on the gravestones and plaques were unreadable.
Then went to the Burketown Wharf. This was an important port back in the old days as it provided much need supplies to the northern outback. It would have been interesting to see it as it was back then.
There is camping by the river but would you believe the council charges $35 per night for it and that does not include any power and water or toilets or anything? Not for me but I had a good alternative. Tiranna Springs Roadhouse is about 25km south of Burketown and on the way I was headed. They charge $12 a night unpowered with free access to washing machines. So I went there and got a load of washing done for free. That was handy because it would be some time before I got to do any more washing. It was a nice spot and I had some phone coverage. Hey come on. I know you are thinking, ‘big deal’, but this is the outback you know.
