Mary Kathleen & Corella Dam
On Tuesday the 6th July I arrived at Mary Kathleen Township. This was the town that was built to service the workers and their families for the Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine. It was a fully thriving town with a school, RSL Club, shops, Post Office, Police Station, churches etc. When the mine ceased operations in 1982 the buildings were auctioned off and many are still in use today. So once all the buildings went the landscape was left with all these slabs. I don’t know how long the old township has been available for camping but obviously for sometime. Everyone camping can find a slab to use if they want one. Take a look.
I even found a spot which is where I camped, where someone had laid a stone driveway. Verry upper class.
It is a beautiful spot. It is privately owned by a station owner and his cattle are always roaming around grazing. I loved the evening sun coming through the trees here.
I also loved the morning sun on these hills when I came out my door the next morning.
After a great breakfast I took a walk around the old township.
At the town square there are information boards providing some good info. Many former residents of the town have commented that the years they spent here were the best years of their lives.
Once I completed the walk I drove out to the old mine. Views from there are nice.
There were huge mounds of tailings/overburden.
Then for the old mine quarry itself. It was good visiting the old uranium mine but I am just wondering why my hands and feet now glow in the dark? Hmmmmm!
Back to camp for a cuppa and then took the short 10km, or so, drive to Corella Dam. This is another free camp which is set beautifully on this dam. It is also packed.
I then drove around to the Clem Walton Park which is set on the river that flows out at the foot of the dam. There are plenty of vans around there as well. I climbed the hill beside the dam wall and got some photos of the dam and the view back to the vans camped at Corella Dam.
Then there are photos of the Clem Walton Park looking to the foot of the dam wall. I did not get a photo of the actual camping area along the rivere there.
I went back to camp, grabbed some lunch and went and found some firewood which there was plenty of. I had done a couple of long driving days so it was good to have a relaxed day. I did some reading and I think some time on my blog, had a fire and a very pleasant evening.
